A low headline figure can be valid for a small open-soil drip layout and still be irrelevant to a finished villa with lawn, paving and a new water source.

It does not pretend that every square metre has the same material or hydraulic demand.

Do Dubai irrigation contractors charge per sqm?

Some do advertise square-metre rates, while others quote by garden size, zone, component list or a designed lump sum. Current public Dubai pages show a wide spread: one provider advertises about AED 20–60 per sqm, while another cites roughly AED 50–130 per sqm. Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable because their inclusions are not identical.

A useful sqm calculation needs at least five qualifiers: the measured irrigated area, planting and lawn split, number of operating zones, water-source pressure and flow, and route/reinstatement condition. A 50 sqm minimum project can cost more per sqm than a 300 sqm open site because the controller, connection, valves, testing and callout do not shrink with area.

A proper irrigation design starts with pressure and flow

Rain Bird's design manual starts with site information, irrigation requirements and water/power supply before selecting equipment and sizing valves or pipe. That order matters. Static pressure alone is not enough; the designer needs available flow and operating pressure at the time the system will run. Too many outlets on one zone can produce dry patches even when the controller and valves work.

Ask for a simple scaled layout showing the water source, main line, zone valves, laterals, emitters or heads, controller, cable route, buildings, paving and known utilities. The quote should state pipe sizes and classes rather than offering only “full irrigation.” Before trenching, community rules and buried electrical, water and communication services need to be identified.

Drip, sprinkler or a mixed system?

Drip irrigation

Drip tubing and emitters deliver water near the root zone and suit shrubs, trees, hedges and many planting beds. In Dubai's climate, it can reduce overspray onto walls and paving. The design still needs filtration, pressure regulation where required, flushing points and emitters selected for the plants and run length. A blocked or poorly regulated line can look intact while delivering unevenly.

Sprinklers

Sprinklers suit lawn where head spacing, radius, precipitation rate and pressure are coordinated. Fewer heads are not automatically cheaper if they leave gaps or overspray hardscape. Ask the installer to demonstrate coverage and adjust arcs after the turf and planting edges are final.

Mixed systems

Most villa gardens benefit from separate drip and sprinkler zones because beds and lawn do not need the same delivery method or schedule. Trees, high-sun lawn and shaded beds may justify further zoning. The controller station count should include a sensible allowance for the actual plan, not an arbitrary premium.

What adds most to an installation quote?

  • More independent zones: extra valves, boxes, cable, controller capacity and commissioning.
  • Finished hardscape: approved crossings, lifting and replacing pavers, core drilling or alternative routes.
  • Inadequate pressure or flow: redesign, smaller concurrent zones, filtration/regulation or a properly sized pump and tank arrangement.
  • Smart controls: Wi-Fi module, weather/sensor inputs, enclosure, connectivity and programming.
  • Large trees and differing exposure: separate delivery and scheduling instead of one uniform run time.
  • Unknown existing system: tracing pipes, locating valves and testing field wiring before reuse.

Current UAE retail listings show ordinary multi-station controller hardware in the hundreds of dirhams before modules, enclosure, cabling, installation and programming. A large “smart upgrade” allowance should therefore state exactly which hardware and labour it buys. Pump and tank work should be separated because it requires hydraulic and electrical scope beyond the controller.

Run the system zone by zone. Record which valves operate, observe pressure and coverage, inspect valve boxes and accessible pipe, and compare meter or usage data when appropriate. Water use and scheduling in Dubai

DEWA recommends efficient garden watering practices, including drip irrigation for suitable plants and watering during cooler periods. The correct run time still depends on plant type, soil, emitter output, season and exposure. As of July 2026, DEWA's published residential water tariff uses progressive consumption slabs, adds a monthly fuel surcharge and applies 5% VAT. That makes leaks and overwatering a real operating-cost issue. Do not convert the tariff into a promised saving without measuring the old system's water use and the new design's actual schedule.
